Text: Chemistry,
Addison-Wesley
Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and the changes
that matter undergoes.
Students enrolled in the
general
chemistry course will:
- Review the basic classifications of matter, and the organization
of the periodic table
- Study the history of radioactivity and relate these processes to
the development of our understanding of the atom.
- Study the relationships between atomic structure, the periodic
table, and the chemical behavior of elements.
- Learn to represent and balance chemical equations.
- Apply the principle of stoichiometry to chemical reactions.
- Study the basic principles of gas behavior and apply simple
mathematical laws to the changes in gas volume.
- Learn to approach multi-step problem solving in a clear and
logical fashion.
- Work with units and dimensional analysis in their problem solving.
- Be expected to assume more responsibility for their learning,
completing reading assignments and sample problems on their own, as
well as working to draw parallels between class discussions and the
text.
- Work on experiments involving mathematical calculations,
including error analysis.
Topics to be covered (as
time permits):
Week 1 Scientific method, lab rules etc. (Chapter 1)
Week 2 Properties of matter/physical and chemical properties (Chapter 2)
Week 3 Scientific measurement (Chapter 3)
Week 4 Density (Chapter 3)
Week 5-6 Atomic structure and the periodic table (Chapter 5)
Week 7-9 Chemical bonding, naming, formula writing (Chapter 6)
Week 10-12 Chemical quantities, mole (Chapter 7)
Week 13-15 Types of chemical reactions, balancing chemical equations
(Chapter 8)
Second semester
Week 1-3 Stoichiometry (Chapter 9)
Week 4-5 Nature of gases (Chapter 12)
Week 6-7 Water and aqueous systems (Chapter 17)
Week 8-9 Solutions (Chapter 18)
Week 10-12 Acids and bases (Chapter 20-21)
Week 13-15 Organic Chemistry (Chapter 25-26)
Week 13-14 Nuclear Chemistry (Chapter 28)
Week 15 To be announced
Week 16-17 Projects and review
Grading: Tests comprise 60%,
other work 40% of student ‘s grade
- Students will complete one term paper on a topic of their choice
due at the end of fourth quarter.
- Students will complete homework as assigned by the teacher
- Students will complete all laboratory work as assigned by the
teacher.
- Students will be tested over material covered in class, from
readings, and laboratory work
- All laboratory work is due the day after the lab is
completed. Students are expected to participate in laboratory
activities. All lab work will have points for
participation. If the student is not participating in the lab
these points will be deducted.
- All homework will be due as assigned.
- There will be no make-up labs. Students must get the
information about the lab from a classmate then write their own report.
- All tests except the final may be retaken before the next chapter
test.
- Students must have parents signature on the first test and
meet with Mrs. Teel to determine a course of action for studying before
retaking a test.
