Sion Service Learning Agreement

Service Hour Requirements:

Beginning with freshman year, each student will be expected to complete approximately 25 hours of service per year.

One hundred hours of service, including the senior service project, are required for graduation.

Service hours must be turned in during the semester in which they are completed. Summer service hours are due in September (Check your planner for exact dates.)

Recognizing that there are several different types of service that are valuable and productive, the required service hours will be broken down into the following categories. Our hopes are that in trying different types of service work, each student will learn and grow in her commitment to doing service, as well as find a type of service that she sincerely enjoys. The following is a breakdown of the categories:

1) Immediate communities: Learning to give back to your immediate community is an invaluable lesson. Helping Sion work toward its mission, as well as assisting at your former school, helping club sports, your church, and at summer camps can contribute to the well being of your immediate communities.

Up to 25% of the student's hours may be completed in this category.

2) Practical Work: In this category, students give of their time and talents to benefit the suffering and needy i the local community through hands-on work with different social service organizations in the area. Service hours in this category might be: office work at a hospital, organizing a food pantry, cleaning cages at an animal shelter, making phone calls for an organization, helping at a fundraiser for a non-profit organization, etc.

Up to 35% of the student's hours may be completed in this category.

3) Working with Marginalized People: Our hearts change when we meet and interact with real people, who have real needs. Service hours in this category might be: visiting the elderly in a nursing home, tutoring disadvantaged students, serving meals at a soup kitchen, playing with the kids at a shelter for victims of domestic abuse, working with people with disabilities, etc.

A minimum of 40% and up to 100% of the student's service hours may be completed in this category.
